텍사스의 시인  John Thurman “무궁화 소재로 한국 역사 노래”     달라스에서 동쪽으로 150마일 떨어진 롱비우(Longview) 시에 사는 John Thurman씨는 시인이다. 직업은 장애인들과 노인들을 돌보는 업무를 하고 있는 텍사스 주 공무원이지만 여가를 이용해 틈틈히 시를 쓴다. 실력은 아마추어를 뛰어 넘는다. 지난해 9월 The International Library of Poetry가 공모한 콘테스트에서 ‘영원(Eternity)’이라는 시로 Outstanding Achivement상을 받았고, 이 기관에서 만든 CD에 그의 시가 수록되기도 했다. 이 CD 제작에는 전 세계 33개 국가의 시인들이 응모했던 것으로 알려졌다. John Thurman씨와 함께 텍사스주 공무원으로 일하는 한인 임선혜씨는 24일 Thurman씨가 무궁화를 소재로 쓴 시를 코리안저널에 보내왔다. 코리안저널과의 전화통화에서 Thurman씨는 “한국에서 입양된 2명의 친구들로부터 한국의 문화와 역사를 듣고 매우 흥미로웠다. 무궁화는 한국인 문화에 매우 중요한 꽃이고 과거의 역사를 기억하는 뜻에서 시를 써봤다”고 무궁화를 소재로 시를 쓰게  된 이유를 밝혔다. Thurman 시인의 시 ‘Rose of Sharon’(무궁화) 전문을 게재한다. 시의 ‘맛’을 망칠까 염려돼 따로 우리말로 번역하지는 않았다. 중고등학생 자녀들이 있는 사람은 자녀들과 함께 시의 의미를 음미하는 것도 의미가 있을 것이다.              <Rose of Sharon> From the Central Asian Mongolia plains Flowed the beginnings of Korean rains Rains that brought the people home Forever away from the need to roam   Finding roots of permanency in mountains That soon embraced the three Kingdoms Silla, Goguryeo and Baekje exploded through Establishing foundations that were solidly true   Continuing progression towards culture's illuminating light Allowed emergence of Seonang's spiritual might People of the Seonang sprit blessed All in the village who stressed   During long periods of destructive drought Two water containers were sprinkled about Trying to change what was devastating Summoning forth spring's season so replenishing   Ipchun begins the season of wonderment Waiting for heavenly flower's visual excitement Eyes of past misfortune sought relief And release from drought's binding grief   100 days of flowering sensual passion Constantly fill this land of sensation Erasing any past memories of dullness Life is enjoyed to its fullness   Heavenly flower of wondrous encompassing beauty Viewing the Rose of Sharon's majesty Fills all souls with contentment's grace Cementing the heart to passion's embrace   You are the Rose of Sharon Emitting the enlightened effervescence of Ipchun Creating a past and future flow For all existence to continually know
