1. 신혼부부  The bride wanted to disguise the fact that they were honeymooning and asked her husband while on the plane if there was any way they could make it appear thar they had been married for a long time. "Sure," said the husband, "you carry the bags."  <> disguise : 위장하다  신부는 신혼여행중이라는 사실을 숨기고 싶었다. 그래서 비행기 속에서 신랑을 보고 결혼한지 오래된 부부같이 보일 방법이 없겠느냐고 물었다. "물론 있지. 짐들을 당신이 들고 다니면 되는거요"

 

2. 입찰  The spirited bidding was halted temporarily when the auctioneer held up his hand and announced! "One of the gentlemen in the audience has lost his wallet containing fifteen thousand dollars. He has asked me to tell you that he is offering a reward of five hundred dollars for its, immediate return-no questions asked." There was a brief hush in the hall. Then a voice from the back was heard: "Five hundred and twenty-five!"  <> spirited : 활기띤   <> bidding  : 입찰, 값을 부름   <> reward   : 보상, 사례금   <> no questions asked : 문제삼지 않는다   <> a brief hush : 잠깐의 침묵  경매인은 손을 번쩍 들어 활기띤 입찰을 잠시 중단시키고 장내에 알렸다. 3. 광고시대  The man who was coordinating the TV news program looked visibly terrorstricken. "Flash! We have just received a news bulletin on a great catastrophe that will probably touch every human being on earth. But first... this word from our sponsor!..."  <> terror - stricken : 공포에 사로잡힌, 벌벌 떠는   <> coordinate : 조정하다   <> flash : 속보   <> news bulletin : 뉴스특보   <> catastrophe : 큰 재앙   <> this word from our sponsor : 우리의 스폰서의 말, 곧 광고  TV 뉴스프로를 진행시키는 사람은 역력히 겁에 질린 표정이었다. "뉴스특보입니다. 지구상의 모든 사람에게 영향을 끼칠 일대 이변에 관한 뉴스특보가 방금 들어왔습니다. 하지만 우선... 스폰서께서 전하는 말부터 들어주십시오..."

 

4. 구두쇠 A university professor who makes almost a ritual of walikng to work, rain or shine, consented to accept a lift from a friend who overtook him hiking along the way through a heavier-than-usual mist. As the professor climbed in, the driver noticed he wore only one rubber and exclaimed sympathetically, "Lost a rubber, huh?" When the professor answered no, his friend demanded, "Isn't it a bit odd wearing only one?" "한짝은 잃어버린게로군" 아니라고 대답하기에 "한짝만 신고다닌다는건 좀 이상하잖아?"하고 다시 물었다. "한짝에만 구멍이 났거든" 교수의 대답이었다.

 

5. 신부감  No matter which girl he brought home, the bachelor found disapproval from his mother. A friend gave him advice. "Find a girl just like mohte, then she's bound to like her." Some time later, he told his friendly adviser. "Just like you said I found a girl who looked, talked, dressed, and even cooked like mother and just like you said mother liked her." "어머님을 닮은 여자를 구하게. 그럼 어머님 마음에 들것 아닌가" 친구가 충고했다. 얼마후 그는 충고를 해준 친구에게 푸념했다. "자네가 시키는대로 생김새 말씨 옷맵시하며 심지어 음식솜씨까지도 어머니를 닮은 여자를 구해왔더니 자네 말대로 어머님이 좋아하시더군." "그래서 어찌 됐어?"하고 친구가 물었다. "어찌 될것 있나. 아버지가 딱 질색이신데"

 

6. 판매기법  There was an unusually successful door-to-door salesman. "동네 사람들 몇몇이 그러는데 이 댁에서는 도저히 살 형편이 안 된다고들 합니다만 어디 구경이나 하세요"

 

7. 출마의 변  "What is your manin reason for running for Congress?"  a voter asked a candidate. "To help solve unemployment problem.  If you over for me I would be employed," came the answer.  <> run for : ~에 입후보하다   <> Congress : 미국의회   <> unemployment problem : 실업자문제  "당신이 국회에 출마하는 큰 이유는 무엇입니까?" 하고 유권자가 입후보한 사람에게 물었다. "실업자문제 해결을 거들자는 겁니다. 당신이 나한테 찍어준다면 난 실업자 신세를 면하게 되는 것입니다."  입후보자의 대답이었다.

 

8. 철학  Nancy  : "How did you like he new philosophy professor?  Is he really as boring as the say the is?" Caroline : "I don't know. I fell asleep."  <> boring : 진절머리나는   낸시    - "새 철학교수 어떻던? 소문대로 진짜 따분한 사람이야?" 캐롤라인 - "몰라. 난 졸다 나왔으니까."

 

9. 무료숙박  On his first day of retirement, an ex-navy admiral was asked, "How do you feel now you you're out?" His reply : "Fine, just great. When I joined the navy, I has $ 19 in my pocket. Today I have $ 18. Where else can you stay for over 20 years for a dollar?"  <> retirement : 퇴역, 은퇴   <> ex-navy admiral : 해군제독으로 있었던 사람  퇴역한지 하루가 되는 해군제독에게 소감을 물었다. "제대하고나니 기분이 어떻습니까?" "좋아요. 썩 좋아요. 해군에 입대할때 내호주머니에 19달러가 있었어. 지금 내가 가진건 18달러고. 1달러로 20년 이상을 머물러 있을수 있는데가 또 어디 있겠냐구"

 

10. 병역기피  The army oculist asked a crafty draftee to read the chart. "What chart?" asked the draftee. "Just sit down in that chair and I'll show you," said the officer. "What chair" asked the man. Deferred because of bad eyesight, the draftee went to a movie. When the light came onm he was horrified to discover the oculist in the seat next to him. "Excuse me," said the conscript calmy, "where is this bus headed for?"  <> crafty : 교활한   <> draftee : conscript : 징병대상자   <> oculist : 안과의사   <> defer : 연기하다  안과담당 군의관은 교활한 징집대상자에게 시력표를 읽으라고 했다. 그러자 청년은 "무슨 표 말입니까?"라고 물었다. "그 의자에 앉게. 내가 보여줄테니"하고 군의관이 말하자 젊은이는 "무슨 의자 말입니까"하고 또 물었다. 시력이 나빠서 징집연기처분을 받고나온 청년은 영화를 보러갔다. 그런데 불이 켜져서 바로 옆자리에 그 군의관이 앉아있는것을 보고는 질겁을 했다. "실례합니다. 이 버스 어디로 가는 겁니까?" 그는 침착하게 물었다.
